Contemporary oak framed Living Room black wood burning stove and grey sofas

The R-Affordable House brings together contemporary design, socially responsible construction and high-performance building products to deliver a quality affordable house. This house is economical to run and uses sustainable materials in an innovative way.

The desire for a spacious, user-friendly house, was at the heart of our client’s decision to self-build on this beautiful plot overlooking the Sound of Mull.

Minimalist white Bulthaup kitchen with wooden worktop and modern benches kitchen island

The single storey, detached, timber-framed home overlooks the Sound of Mull on the west coast of Scotland and features unusual white-rendered tapering walls, under a grey slate roof.

The house comprises an open plan living area flanked by bedrooms with gallery space in the eaves at either end.

Large windows are included in the main living space and also feature in both bedrooms.

A mixture of painted timber boarding and exposed timber doors creates a fresh, nautical feel to the house.

The house was constructed over a 12 month period utilising volunteers from The Oswin Project (an ex-offender charity) and uses off-the-shelf timber components.
